The persimmon-calyx motif, known in Chinese as shidi wen (柿蒂纹), is an ancient symmetrical ornament formed around the four-lobed calyx at the top of a persimmon fruit. Related four-part motifs appeared in Chinese decorative arts as early as the Han dynasty and were later used across textiles, lacquerware, metalwork and architectural decoration.
